  1. 1500 miles

  2. Both are volcanoes, but they are different type.  Mt. Rainer is stratovolcano while Mauna Loa is a shield volcano.  Check the links that describes both of them.  Mt. Rainer is part of mountain range (Cascades) that is created by subduction of Juan the Fuca plate under North American Plate.  In past 200 years, it erupted only once or so.  Mauna Loa is sitting on one of the earth’s hot spot, and it is far larger than Mt. Rainer.  It had exploded numerous times in the past 200 years.
