  1. Nationalities (#).

       1. The quality of being national, or strongly attached to one's own nation; patriotism.

       2. The sum of the qualities which distinguish a nation; national character.

       3. A race or people, as determined by common language and character, and not by political bias or divisions; a nation.

       4. Existence as a distinct or individual nation; national unity and integrity.

       5. The state or quality of belonging to or being connected with a nation or government by nativity, character, ownership, allegiance, etc.; as, to record one's nationality on identification papers; the Soviet Union had citizens of many nationalities.

ethnicity (n) a term which represents social groups with a shared history, sense of identity, geography and cultural roots which may occur despite racial difference

Let's consider Puerto Ricans as an example of an ethnicity. Many Puerto Ricans represent various blends of White, Red and/or Black races and yet they refer to themselves collectively as Boricuas

. Despite color difference, Puerto Ricans share an ethnicity. Ethnicity shapes a group's culture - the food, language, music, and customs.

Many Whites do not consider themselves to be "ethnic" or to have an ethnicity although all of us do! Whether you come from an Italian background, an Irish background, or a combination of the two, these ethnic cultures have most likely played a very important role in shaping how you view, interpret, and interact with the world.

Also Known As: Compare with the definition of Race

  2. Nationality means the country in which one is a citizen of.

Ethnicity means the group of people one shares cultural or traditional ties with. Thus if one said ones' nationality was Finnish then one would be a Finn but if ones' ethnicity was Samii (an ethnic minority in Finland living near the Arctic circle) then one would be a Finn of Samii ethnic origin.

In Iceland they're practically all of the same ethnic origin and therefore there's no reason as to why the ethnic origin would be of any importance. Frankly, ones' ethnic origin really doesn't matter as much in most of modern Europe nor does ones' racial origin. What does tend to matter is ones' religious affiliation coupled with ones' politics.

    Cheers

  3. Nationality:-

Nationality is a relationship between a person and their state of origin, culture, association, affiliation and/or loyalty. Nationality affords the state jurisdiction over the person, and affords the person the protection of the state.

    Ethnicity:-

An ethnic group or ethnicity is a population of human beings whose members identify with each other, and who are regarded as distinctive by those outside the group, turning the group into a "people." Ethnic groups are united by common cultural, behavioral, linguistic, ritualistic, or religious traits, usually but not always on the basis of a common genealogy or ancestry.

  5. To be basic about it nationality is simply where you were born, example a ethiopian can be born in canada and their nationality would be canadian, they were born there.

Ethnicity is the race you belong to, example an ethiopian person born in canada would have canadian nationality but their ethnicity would be black or african, ethnicity really isn't related to where your born.
