What's the difference between "oil" and "petroleum"??

i'm really confused as some says they're the same. But i have seen somewhere that they're different in a way. plz help!

  1. Petroleum is specifically oil taken from the ground.  Oil is a more generic term, and can refer to plant oils such as soybean and olive oil as well as to petroleum and its derivatives.


  2. Oil is just one item, but petroleum covers all aspects of the category, such as petroleum jelly,  kerosene, etc.

    petroleum occurs naturally in the rock strata of certain geological formations. when fractionally distilled, it yields paraffin, fuel oil, kerosene, gasoline, etc.

  5. oil is shorter. they are synonyms.

  6. Oil or petroleum is raw mineral oil (from the earth), whereas petrol is the inflammable liquid produced from petroleum and used as a fuel to drive motor engines, etc.
