What's the difference between rugby league and rugby union?

One of the biggest differances is that for every 5th tackle the attacking side has to give the ball away or else at the 6th tackle they get an automatic turn over.

Having played both sports my opinion is that rugby union is organised ball kicking mayhem with 15 players, where forward passes and knock on`s in the main are ignored by the ref to enable the game to flow.although the national games are far far better than the club games.

Rugby league has 13 players and is the best game in the world!!

in rugby league (puffs rugby) when you tackle someone you have to let the player stand up and roll the ball back to another and play continues and you are allowed 6 tackles, were as in rugby union you flaw them and dont let them get back up.

try..5pts, penalty.. 3 pts, drop goal.. 3 pts, conversion.. 2pts.

League..13 players (no flankers), uncontested scrums, no rucks, mauls or lineouts.

Try...4 pts, drop goal... 1 point (I'm not sure about penalties and conversions)

They are different games but both are much better than football.

Union is a bunch of 15 men who like to lie about on top of each other and then hoof the ball from one end of the pitch to the other. Very boring!.

League has 13 men, is faster, more skillful and not stop and start all the time.

Too many little technical things for the ref to blow up on in union. They can try and do a scrum about 7 times and in the meantime I've fallen asleep....................

league teams have 13 players,union15,6 tackles in league,rucks and mauls in yawnion,league is faster and more open(due to less players),yawnion more stop start,the rules are very similar,having played both i must admit  i found league,harder and more enjoyable.the people who say league is for puffs,pansies obviously ave never held a rugby ball.

BOTH are Professional now.

Leaguie is Basically 7 tackles, no rucks etc (Few Scrums)

  Union is most probably what your used to, Scrums, Rucks,

  Forwards and Backs etc etc

Different codes, Rugby union is being played at the mo in the world cup, its a lot more free flowing in terms of play and a lot more technical in terms of rucks (player goes to ground & the ball is recycled and reused) and mauls (player stays on his feet and other bind around and drive forward without going to ground). there are also more set pieces, the lineout is more complicated and the scores are different (drop goal is worth 3 in union and 1 in league)

league is more physical, every time the play is tackled play stops, the player stands up and rolls the ball through his legs and game goes on. there is no need for a ruck in league. You have 6 attempts (6 tackles from the opposition) to score if you do not manage to score in this time the ball gets turned over and the other team have 6 attempts to score at you.
