I was abroad recently and I noticed that Europeans have a totally different take on sandwiches than Americans. They have all these ready-made sandwiches sliced into triangular pieces in triangular boxes that have really inventive and unusual fillings. I don't think I saw one sandwich that was just tomato, lettuce, and slices of meat. European sandwiches were all about the prawns, cheese and onion, apple, celery and were quite refreshing when compared to their cold-cutted counterparts. How is it that this sandwich culture never emerged in the US?

  1. You went to Europe and all you noticed was the sandwiches where different?

  2. Most American sandwich stores let the customer pick what they want on their sandwiches (like Subway)...you get to pick the type of bread, meats, veggies, cheese, and dressings & sauces you want.  People have different tastes and that is what American shops go for.

Any place that offers pre-made sandwiches in the U.S. is usually that garbage food you get at a gas station.  Other than that, it is usually up to the specific person's preference.  Most places 'customize' the choices I guess.
