Question:

What's the difference between thinset mortar and "marble & granite" mortar?

I use thinset mortar when setting ceramic tiles, but now I'd like to set some 12" by 12" stone tiles on a counter top. I saw "Marble & Granite Fortified Premium Mortar" at the local home center. Should I use this instead of thinset for the stone? I also have smaller ceramic tiles to set on the bathtub surround; can I use the marble & granite mortar for that or should I buy thinset?

  1. Hi there, in my opinion you have to use marble & granite mortar because it is much better to put marble & granite mortar than the thinset mortar because it is much easier to put marble & granite mortar and they goes last longer or if you want more information about your question I am giving you a link I search on a net it helps me a lot so visit the website given below.

  2. use the Marble &Granite, for the stone. And i would buy the thinset for the smaller tile in bath since the tub surround will flex slightly

  3.   I m w/ Ron.. You can use reg  thinset on marble as long as its white.. Grey thinset may stain some lighter colored marble and stones.Thinset should be latex fortified..or a fortified thinset some have polymers and such.. Just dont use the 7 00$ a bag thinset unless its just for under cement board  GL

  4. I have only used thinset for either. I would guess that the m&g mortar may have more concrete in the mix for a little stronger bond. If you want to use the m&g for the surround it should be no problem. In the end I have used the thinset and had good results. They sometimes require different grouts though.

  5. It is my understanding that Marble and granite mortar is a medium bed mortar allowing you to "shift" the stones in order to make up thickness differences. Thin set mortar is just that "thin set" typically used for guaged tiles and natural stone. that do not have thickness differences. If your 12x12's are guaged than there is no reason that I am aware of not to use thin set. Just use white. It will probably darken the stones after you set them but that is just the moisture from the thin set, that will dry out in about a week. Then seal it.
