What's the difference between university and college?

  1. University and college are the same thing, however sometimes at universities they call their departments colleges.  For example, the department of english may also be known as the college of english.  But in general, if you say "I am going to college" and "I am going to a university", they are the same thing.  


  2. In the US, a college usually specializes in one area (such as liberal arts, or education) and a university has a collection of colleges (many colleges in one university). In other countries, colleges cannot grant degrees but grant certificates or technical training.
