If I'm tiling over a plywood sub floor or even a tub surround, does it matter if I use a concrete board or a fiber board like Fiberock?

  1. the strength is the difference

  2. You should use the concrete board, its durarock. It handles moister 100% better and your remodel will last a long long time. If you use fiber board (key word fiber), fibers get wet, which = mold and rotting. Hope I helped you out!

  3. I would have to disagree. The fiber in fiberock or hardibacker is fiberglas. I find these easier to work with than durock which tends to crumble. All are designed for use as you are intending.

    Hope that helps.

  4. The rock board is made to be used under tile. Use the concrete board it will save you a lot of trouble later.

  5. Concrete board doesn't hold moisture, so it should be used anywhere that it may come into contact with water, such as behind a tile shower surround (as opposed to behind a one-piece acrylic surround).  Frankly, anytime you are tiling in a wet area, the concrete backer board is best, but the ease of using the other types sometimes outweighs the durability of concrete.

  6. You will want to use durarock. I used it in my shower area and it holds up alot better. You dont want a board that will hold moisture. Use hardibacker it will save you time and trouble in the long run. Good luck and have fun.
