I am currently getting counseling with a general counselor for Panic Disorder. I am on Lexapro and Xanax, which i am reducing my dosage of (xanax only) to see how i do on just the lexapro. I am hearing more about Cognitive Therapy and am wondering what the difference really is. I am alot better since my panic attacks began in April, but am worried about coming off my meds. Any advice on the cognitive therapy?

  1. Cognitive behavioral therapy is very good for changing your reactions to things and behaviors associated with your anxiety, where I feel that just talking to a counselor is trying to figure out the root of the anxiety itself.  I prefer C.B.Therapy.

  2. Cognition is a fancy word for thinking.

What we think "impacts" our emotions. Cognitive Therapy is a way to "think" through a problem, such as panic situations, not so much by flooding but by discussing triggers that lead up to the "feeling" anxious.

Anxiety can be triggered by certain situations or presenting conditions.
