  1. First of all what do you smoke?  Cigarettes are treated the worst.  If you smoke an occasional cigar you may even be treated like a non smoker with some companies.  If you smoke a pipe you may be treated like a non smoker as well.  Some companies are very competitive in the smokers market place.  I would suggest that you shop the rates with a wide variety of companies.

  2. Depends on the type of policy and the company.  For whole life rates may be at least 15% more than non-smoker rates.  For term rates the premium can actually double.

  3. Sometimes they can be as much as double for smokers.  Most companies have several classes for both smokers and nonsmokers so it will also depend on your health outside of smoking.  

    Sometimes you can also get them to agree to lower your rate after a year or two from a smoker rate to a nonsmoker rate if you agree to quit smoking and agree to a urine test.  A good agent should be able to help you with this aspect.
