  1. A superpower is a state with a leading position in the international system and the ability to influence events and project power on a worldwide scale; it is traditionally considered to be one step higher than a great power. Alice Lyman Miller (Professor of National Security Affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School), defines a superpower as "a country that has the capacity to project dominating power and influence anywhere in the world, and sometimes, in more than one region of the globe at a time, and so may plausibly attain the status of global hegemon.

The G8, formerly the G6 is a group of countries that has met annually since the 70's to discuss issue of concern to the world. They are made up of, France, The United States, The U.K., Germany, Italy, Japan, Canada, and Russia. Originally just 6 countries Canada, and Russia joined later on. These countries represent the worlds largest economies. Together, the G8 countries represent about 65% of the Gross World Product, the majority of global military power, and almost all of the world's active nuclear weapons.

The eight countries making up the G8 represent about 14% of the world population, but they account for 65% of the world's economic output measured by gross domestic product, all 8 within the top 11 countries according to the CIA World Factbook.
