What's the disadvantage of straight up/straight down voting in the Congress and Senate on bills?

Is there an advantage to a bill for something like minimum wage being raised introduced but then other stipulations being added on that have nothing to do with the minimum wage?

Wouldn't getting rid of this be a start towards real change? Or is there some advantage to this that I'm not aware of. Advantage for you and me the tax payer that is.

  1. I say, if they can add riders onto bills then the president should have a line-item veto.

I am in favor of neither... but in the interest of checks and balances...

  2. If that method of voting were permitted, then people like Harry reid and nancy Pelosi couldn't play petty dictator.

  3. I hate riders. They should definitely be eliminated because it prevents our elected officials from voting on the bill at face value. Some politicians have to vote down great bills just because some one put a really bad rider on it. It's a sneaky tactic that accomplishes little and wastes out time and tax money.
