  1. I had rats, hamsters and gerbils and the easiest and best cage to maintain was the glass fish aquariums. It was very easy to clean and scrub. The animals tend to shoot out the bedding out of the wire cages. Although, I have never tried the plastic tubes.

  2. Definitely home-made bin cages. They don't have bars that can be peed on, so you just remove the hamster, toys, and dump the bedding, hose it down, dry it, and add more bedding, then hamster and toys! Very easy. With the other cages, you might have to scrub the bars to get a good clean, or soak the tubes and get a special brush to scrub the insides.

Here's a link on how to make a nice big home-made bin cage!

  3. Well first off i think that a plastic cage is the easiest for a hamster to get out of. Wired cages allow enough ventilation and the cage top can be poped out and then there is just the bottom and it is like a litterpan you just empty and clean. Simple. Plastic cages are probably also easy to clean but escape artist would be easily able to get out. A tank can be hard to clean and also a little heavy. But the tank is glass so the hamster cannot bite on the bars and such. Wired cages also help keep the hamsters teeth down. But can cause brain damage if they get addicted. Whichever sounds the best about you.

  4. Barred Cages are easier, but your hamster is prone to kicking out bedding out of its cage, and make sure it's durable and the bars are close together otherwise it might escape.

  5. i have always used glass aquariums for hamsters and gerbils.  i had wire cages and the bedding just went everywhere.  i would not use plastic because hamsters may chew on the plastic.

metal cages are a bit easier to clean but i found with hamsters they were more likely to get their feet caught in the wire when they were active.  i am happy with aquariums.  they are easy to clean out and there is less mess with bedding.

  6. You should get what's best for the hamster, not what's best to clean. The hamster needs plents of room and stimulation (wheel, tubes, etc)

  7. The kind without a hamster in it.

  8. I like barred cages best, with a deep pan. You don't have plastic sides getting all dirty and pee-covered to scrub. Just dump out the bedding, clean the pan, and fill it again. Sometimes you may have to clean off the bars, but only so often.

    Plus, they get better ventilation.
