I have a german shepard (male) and a pit bull (female) and a tiny backyard! As a result, my grass is dying at a rapid pace. Anyone have any good advice on an easy, inexpensive way to keep my grass growing??

  1. Thatch...reseed. But it will always be a constant problem.  I just put My german Shepard up for adoption for other reasons.

  2. what you should do is when your dogs are down peeing water the areas with lots of water to dilute the pee so the grass wont die. to regrow the grass put a little fertilizer and some seed over the dead grass or buy sod to replace it.

  3. You need to dig out the yellow area where he urinated.  Go to Home Depot or a garden store and buy grass seeds and plant them with miracle grow and water.  That should work and it's real cheap.

  4. I'd say just dig up the areas, re-soil and put down new seed. However you may want to look into a kind of pill I heard of, its available at pet stores and you give it to your dogs at meal times. It acts as a base and makes their urine less acidic, and stops it from burning the grass.

A friend of mine has a bull terrier and uses these pills, (or perhaps they come in powder form...I can't recall) and they mix it in with his kibble. It works really well, from what they've told me.

  5. The acidity of dog urine (especially your female pit bull) is what turns the grass brown. Go you your local garden center and pick up a 50 lb. bag of the mineral lime. It is gray in color and non chemical. Spread this in the areas that are affected and water in. Repeat this process each week for approximately 4 weeks. The grass should start to recover.

This fall, you will want to overseed your lawn. I would recommend doing this after you have the lawn core aerated. Core aeration will loosen soil compaction, open up the root zone to moisture, air and nutrients and help to thicken the root zone. This will also provide for an excellent seed bed when you overseed directly after the aeration.

As far as the dogs urine goes, try adding tomato juice to their dog food. Not only do dogs love it, but it will help to lower the acidity of their urine and should help with future browning of the lawn. Keep lime on hand and spread every couple of weeks in the future in the areas where your dogs tend to use the lawn the most for their "jobs".

Lime is relatively inexpensive and won't harm the dogs in the least.

    Hope this helps!
