When I asked before what life was like I got two answers along the lines of "Food takes a while to adjust to" but the chocolate is good.

Tell me about the general food...

  1. Itllhaveyapoopin.

  2. German food in Germany is rich and heavy. Potatoes(pancakes, fried, and in noodles), meats with sauces, pickled vegetables and sausages are the most famous. Desserts are made with heavy cream and the chocolates are very flavorful, not like Hershey's, which is more oily. There is also a lot of wonderful foreign food in Germany. The Turkish food there is great, sold at Donner stands near all of the bar districts. There is also lots of really good Italian food. I'm a vegetarian, and still had plenty of good food while I was there, so there's probably something for every taste.

  3. Will, Will.  Horsemeat butchers are found in France for the most part.  I have lived here, American, for over 15 yrs now and have yet to find a Metzger (butcher) who sells horsemeat.

Great salads and vegatables.  You can't believe the difference in how good carrots, potatoes, brussel sprouts, asparagus taste here as opposed to U.S. varieties.  I don't find the food heavy, I read that all the time but disagree.  Very little oil used on salads, lots of fresh herbs are used instead of heavy salt.  Yes, we do LOVE our spaetzle but seriously, they are made with an almost identical to the U.S. pancake batter.  Spaetzle is just boiled instead of FRIED in butter or fat.  Well, we might do that AFTER we boil them but not always.  Cheese, LOTS of cheese here and all over Europe.  Delicious but very little of that rubbery stuff Americans call Mozzarella.  You haven't lived until you have had Buffalo milk mozzarella (primarily made in Italy). Desserts are better than American ones, a LOT less sugar is used.  i.e. think of a pint of heavy whipping cream, normally an American would use about 1/4 - 1/2 cup of sugar, here we use one max two packets of Vanillin Zucker.  That equals max 2 tbsps.  And that's not even saying anything about how much better the cream and butter tastes here.  What is it we do to food in America that makes it devoid of taste?   COFFEE, Europeans know how to grind coffee.  Forget the Maxwell House or Folgers, that is just hot dirty water with very little taste.  Buy Movenpick if you can find it stateside just to get a little impression of what good coffee should taste like.

Chocolate, easy to find German or any type of European chocolate stateside.  German restaurants in the U.S. can't produce food as good as here because the products are not readily available.

    Good luck and Gute Essen

  4. hey will,

I must correct your ideas of horse meet in Germany. Not all germans like to eat horse meat, there for horse meat is not allowed to be sold at normal butchers with a long tradition.

A "Frikadelle" is a Burger made of crunched meat normally pork and beef half and half. But there are also "Frikadellen" made of fish. In contrast to the french the germans are not very fond of horse meat.

    Greetings from Hamburg, Germany

  5. Its very meaty, one might say. They even have horse butchers totally dedicated to the animal! They like their pickles and preserves(rollmops-pickled herring,sauerkraut-cabbage)

Also dumplings and rich sauces,a cute noodle called spatzle'

They do good things with root veg.Desserts, well they do a bit too much of the old alcohol, cream and cherry thing for my tastes. Best fast food"Frikadelle" (horse meat sausage) with curry sauce..

  6. I don't know much about the chocolate other than 'german chocolate cake"  (is it even originated in Germany??)  but there will often heavy meats and carbs involved in their meals.  But that's my opinion and experience.

Look up  some of the following for ideas:  Bratwurst, wienerschnitzel, spaetzel, hassenpfeffer (rabbit).

    Google for 'german food'

  7. Rich hearty and high in fat. I like braunschwiger and cabbage, and an uncle of mine used to make the best hasenpfeffer, Unfortunately I had to cut back due to high cholesterol.

By the way, German Chocolate Cake is not a German food. It was a winning cakes recipe from a contest held by ht German Chocolate Company.
