  1. Light photons interact with the electrons orbiting atoms and molecules giving up their energy to the electrons.  Pigments would provide molecules that interact with specific wavelengths of incident light photons at a location where photosynthesis is to occur (I am not a botanist).


  2. There are various photosynthetic pigments and they perform different functions .Chief is chlorophyll (green pigment) which can directly trap photons from the sunlight and utilize for preparing food i.e photosynthesis, It also imparts green colour to plants.Other photosynthetic pigments like carotenoids and phycobilins indirectly participate in the photosynthesis by trapping photons from different wavelength of light and passing it to chlorophylls for photosynthesis as they are not capable of this function.
