Question:

What's the general opinion about melting ice caps affecting plate technology and volcanic activity ?

If the ice at the poles melted, the pressure at the flattened poles would be altered and redistributed. Seems like a common sense concept, but is just recently coming to the attention of more scientists.

Rapid change in pressure at the poles could then theoretically lead to sudden and relatively extreme movement along the tectonic plates, resulting in earthquakes and volcanoes.

Who sees a possible connection ? We know the planet has gone through ice ages. We don't know how much the advancing and retreating ice at the poles affected the pressure on the tectonic plates, or do we ?

  1. I couldn't find much on the subject, sorry, although I know I've bumped into it before.

Apparently the theory goes that yes, there is a connection.  Increased research and better modeling should provide some insight here.
