  1. depends on the type of skis you are getting.  If you are getting the shaped skiis they say you can go shorter.  I think it depends on your ability too.  my husband runs 210s on straight skis and 170s on the shaped and he's only 5'4", he skiis expert trails.  Poles are based on how tall you are.  standing in ski boots bend your arms at elbow only your tips should be touching the ground.

  2. They are determined by your weight and/or ability.

  3. the shorter the ski the better your control. if you are a beginner you will do better with shorter. poles to armpits

  4. it must depend on your height.

  5. General rules don't apply anymore these days.  Skis have diversified so much that a person can get a huge variation in ski length depending on his/her chosen-type-of-ski, weight, height, skill level, intended usage and aggressiveness.

For example, I personally use a pair of 155cm shaped slalom skis and 174cm mid-fat twin-tips.  That's nearly 20cm of length difference on just ski type and intended usage differences, with everything else being the same.

You would get a much better answer if you went to an online community such as epicski.com and asked the question with more specifics in mind.

  6. whats kind of "skis and poles"? you mean the sport, or the other thing?

  7. Cross Country= ski length should be about the height up to your wrist reaching up, any longer you'll have problem, Poles should be comfortable resting just below your arm pit.

  8. no "general rule".  get outfitted at a ski shop by professionals.
