I will try to explain it better.

If you want to trade stocks, etf's, bonds, mutual funds.

What is the category the above are all categorized under?

I want to say "assets" or "commoditites", but not sure.

  1. stocks, bonds, mutual funds ETF, options are all securities and often refered to as general securities

Securities are assets as well as commodities,

Anything that one owns is considered an asset.

  2. Assets would cover it, but it covers too much. Trade the market/s? Trade investments? Financial instruments? Quoted investments? Call them what you like, as long as you are understood.

  3. The question is a bit ambiguous.

Commodities are another investment vehicle. An asset is something which produces money for you.

  4. Stocks, ETFs and mutual funds are equity.  Treasuries, municipals, mortgages, bonds, etc are fixed income.  Anything you own in your portfolio are "assets".  Commodities are things such as oil, gold, copper, steel, etc which are a good hedge against inflation.  Commodities have been in the news lately mainly due to the value of the dollar falling and rising vs other foreign currencies.

  5. financial securities
