Plastic. without it you would still have time and fire. Time exists whether we have months or not and we never have enough of it anyway. Without plastic to make circuit boards and ICs there would be no PCs and no internet. Cotton and rubber covered electric cables are dangerous, plastic makes them safe. Bakelite is a form of plastic. Do you want wooden light switches?

Even though it can become an obsession, it definitely makes things easier like being able to call the babysitter to check on the kids, calling your s/o's cell phone to find out where he/she is, etc, emailing friends in other countries and hearing back almost instantly, etc.

Humanly? Money that's why we have all the invented goods we are using right now & for all the rest that are yet to be invented.
