What's the highest resolution that a component cable can handle?

  2. Component cables will carry all standard HD resolutions, including 1080P.

    You do not need an HDMI cable to have HD.

    However, some devices are designed so that they will not output some resolutions, particularly 1080P, unless an HDMI cable is used.

  3. "HD Rated" component cables can handle up to 1080p video. But not all component cables were designed for HD video.

    Standard def component cables have been sold for years and appear to work with HD, but can damage the video image a bit.

    If the coax has a bandwidth over about 90 Mhz it's considered HD compatible.

    This reflects that you want cables/switched/devices in the signal path with 3-4 times the max frequency you expect to send.

    Here are the frequencies:

    480i video: 5 Mhz max

    480p video: 13 Mhz max

    720/1080: 35 Mhz
