  1. The Tibetans are protesting for genuine autonomy, freedom to practice their religion  and customs, to speak their own language, to regain control over their land which has been given over to chinese settlers.

Freedom from the domination of the Chinese communist regime who invaded Tibet in the early 1950's and have been commiting cultural genocide ever since.

  2. The Tibetans were invaded by the Chinese in 1950 & have been occupied ever since;their culture has been systematically destroyed, their temples & the indigenous people of Tibet have been decimated. Many thousands of buddhist monks & nuns were tortured & murdered. There are still monks & nuns imprisoned today for "crimes against the state"ie.they have refused to deny their leader HH Dalai Lama.Executions are still being carried out.The Dalai Lama, their spiritual leader, has been in exile in India(no other country would help them despite pleas from the Tibetan government)since,I think,1958,he had to flee to save his surviving people,if he had been murdered, which was the plan of general Mao Tse Tung, the Tibetan soul would have been crushed.

No you don't sound ignorant, this terrible injustice has always been kept "low key" although the Dalai Lama continues to promote peace, touring the world to do so.Just recently Tibetan pilgrims walking over the Himalyas were "shot like dogs"children were arrested,by the chinese liberation army...their crime?they wanted to see the Dalai Lama in Darmasala.

There is also the matter of the Panchen Lama, who helps to find the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama(& vice versa I believe),the last Panchen Lama was arrested some 16 years ago(aged 6) & hasn't been seen since. If you can find a movie called Kundun,it'll give a better insight than I can, there is so much more.Very best to you.B
