  8. Very good answers already.  This may be answered best by Navy personnel stationed on subs.

I was stationed on aircraft carriers for many years on active duty but did get an opportunity to go on a fast attack sub, "Flying Fish", out of Norfolk, Virginia in 1992 as a reservist.  We were out for 2 days and returned.  Of course, subs leave port for indefinite periods but this was a "quick" scheduled run for some sort of operations check.  We submerged only to 200 feet and I can tell you it was a "strange" feeling.

I thought of many "candid" quotes but kept them to myself being a "newbie" to this type boat.  I can tell you this, all Navy ships store and carry large amounts of wood pieces.  Navy personnel are trained in securing "leaks" in pipes, etc. and the best way is "wood" pieces "slammed" with heavy hammers into the hole.  You are trained for this procedure in large enclosures at Navy schools (not on actual ships) to simulate compartments (rooms) on board a ship.  The instructors "flood" the compartment and it is your job with your "shipmates" to stop with the wood all flooding.  You learn quickly to do this, especially shorter people.

Good question and someday go for a tour on a sub.
