  1. He celebrates the mundane, which is fairly interesting, especially because plenty of other sculptors in the fourth century chose to explore abstract ideas, such as Kephisodotos's Eirene with the infant Ploutos, or representations of gods. The Apoxyomenos is a good example of the sculptor's skill. His arm is extended in front of his body (and impressively foreshortened), cutting across the front view of the statue, meaning there is no obvious angle to view it from.

  2. As an incredibly prolific sculptor who enjoyed wealthy and powerful patronage, Lyssipus' work was displayed throughout much of Greece and was to become what the Romans regarded at the ideal expression of Greek sculpture so that many Roman artists were strongly influenced by the natural poses and expressions of his work. Many of his sculptures depicted figures  held in reverence by ordinary people but even these were not presented in an awe-inspiring manner..for example Hermes Fastening His Sandle and Herecles Farnesse (The Resting Hercules). Other figures were of very ordinary people doing very ordinary things..such as the Athlete Using a Body Scraper and Agias of Pharsalos; a champion athlete.

His Socrates is not a man of enormous influence; but simply a man..to be admired because of what he was, not how he looked, to be remembered as he was and not in some idealised form.

When you consider how strongly Roman art influenced that of the rest of Europe ..and still does influnce it...it has to be accepted that Lyssipus is still with us, his work is still training sculptors and other artists today..even those who are inclined to reject his style do so from the basis of knowing that style well; if their work is "different" then his work is what that difference is measured against.
