  1. The job of the speedometer is to indicate the speed of your motorcycle in miles per hour, kilometers per hour or both.

There are two types of speedometers: electronic speedometer and mechanical speedometer or eddy- current speedometer.

How do they work? It is connected to the wheel. They calculate the revolutions made by your wheel and convert into miles/hour or Kilometers/hour. Simple.

  2. Some speedometers use a cable driven by a gear in the front wheel hub to turn a mechanism in the speedometer.

Others work using a small electric motor - they receive an electrical signal from a sender located in the front wheel hub or mounted next to the gearbox sprocket.

  3. The speedo mechanism consists of a worm gear in the front wheel, a flexible shaft cable which connects this worm wheel to the speedometer on the dashboard.

The speedometer on the dashboard is attached to the other end of the flexible shaft cable which is turning in the predetermined ratio to the speed of the vehicle.  This is displayed on the face of the speedo in Kilometers / hour.

    Good luck...

  5. HD's use a magnetic sensor that sits above one of the trans gears and actually counts teeth as they go by.
