I'm a journalism student in the eastern mountains and I'm looking at a few different places to head to. I've got family in Raleigh (brother) and I know that it's been one of the fastest growing towns in the US for several years now. What are Raleigh's biggest newspapers and smaller print media? Is Raleigh a good place for a journalism graduate to go? Also, is Raleigh's local media coverage mostly about state government?

  1. The News & Observer is the main daily newspaper.  I dunno what the job market there is like, I hear they've laid off a good number of employees recently.  Media consolidation and all that.

The Independent Weekly is the major newsweekly for the Triangle area.

Media coverage here is regional...the entire Triangle (Raleigh/Durham/ChapelHill) area is covered as one metro area for the papers and tv news channels.  Yes there is a lot of coverage of state government since it is the capital, but the huge growth in this region means a lot of coverage of local issues, too.
