Wrong Cubby Fan- it's 14. That's the minimum age for a food handlers permit which is required when working in a grocery store. I've linked the state website below with all the laws relating to employing underage individuals. If Safeway has coporate rules disallowing the hire of individuals under the age of 17 then that is something you would have to ask about at the store itself

If you live near one I suggest working for Whole Foods instead- they pay better than Safeway and the benefits (fringe and otherwise) are far superior.
