I have a 2002 Volkswagen Beetle [Hatchback] and for some reason, the passenger airbag is damaged and won't deploit in case of an accident. I was quoted by the VW dealer that it would cost $900 to replace plus labor. I felt this was way too high so I'm trying to get a second opinion please.

  1. Airbags will costs 500 to 1200 depending on the car. They do mark up the part but are the only place to get them new that i know of,plus it should come with a warranty. Whats wrong with the airbag? Why does it need to be replaced?  I also would'nt suggest buying a used airbag its a safety issue and could cause you more problems later.

  2. That sounds reasonable from a dealer. Foreign cars cost a LOT to repair usually. Especially safety equipment due to their laborer's safety and liability factor both to the dealer and manufacturer.

  3. What I would do is find another air bag.  A quality used parts place (junk yard) is the cheapest place to get one.  Or you could purchase a new one.  I then would do the replacement myself.  If you cannot replace it yourself, try making a few calls to friends or family.  Just make sure they know what they're doing.  Best bet is to get a manual on your vehicle.  I have a chilton's repair book for my car.  It is very informative and shows in great detail how to do repairs on your own vehicle.  They run between $20 and $30 at your local parts stores.  Best wishes to you.

  4. Not cheap very costly.Complex construction with airbags.Just shop around.

  5. arond there, because you need to replace the whole Airbag system and because explosive is used so it expensive

  6. Safety first.

    Thats what I think.

So maybe you should ask around to see how much and go for the lowest amount that you can.

    Hopee I helped!

  7. That price seriously sounds about right. Airbags are very expensive to replace

  8. Well souper.gloo, I checked and found that the average price for the inflator module (air bag) is anywhere between $811 to $1102. This is for the part only.

The labor to replace one is about around 1/2 hour. So there is another $40-$50.

I think your dealer is being on the level with you in terms of price. I am curious as to why it is damaged. I am guessing you have an airbag light on and it was diagnosed as a failed passenger side inflator module.

In any case, you not only want it replaced for safety reasons. (Unless you NEVER carry any passengers). But here in California, it is against the law to sell a vehicle with defective restraint systems. You could be held liable if you knowingly sell the car with a defective air bag.

  9. $1000
