  1. My friends tell me that most of the criminals in Ottawa hang out in a seedy area called Parliment Hill...  Avoid it at all costs, these guys will stop at nothing to get you're money..

  2. I've also heard (from someone who works security in that area) that Barrhaven is getting bad.  And there has been alot of gang activity around the Wal-Mart area on Bank Street.

  3. South Keys, the area north of Bayshore mall and the doors by Shoppers Drug Mart at the mall downtown.

  4. Ottawa is a very safe city to be in. I've lived there for 19 years and have never felt any danger. There is so much security because of all the politicians and diplomats living there. The place with more crime would be the night club area in Hull now known as Gatineau.

  5. Well, downtown near the Rideau Centre - not so much right at the Rideau Centre anymore since the gov.'t and police cleaned it up, used to be the biggest for drug sellers, drunks, and violence.

I wouldn't wander around Vanier in the North/East section of Ottawa alone at night, either.  They've always had problems, low-income rentals, alcohol-related fights, stabbings, etc.

And one of the biggest at the moment also is in Centretown - From Chinatown to Wellington Street.

Gangs are starting to become known in Chinatown, and west of that, prostitution has become a big thing if you continue down Somerset St. to the Wellington St. area. And most of the low-rental project housing, unfortunately.

(Debra St., Ritchie St., etc.) - But if you're not looking for trouble, it usually doesn't invite itself into your world.

Other than that, It's really a safe city.  Really.  Like any major city, we have our 'higher crime' areas, but for the most part, the crimes aren't as bad as in the U.S., and during the daytime they're safe.  Just use caution at night.
