  1. Probably the most famous chess game is Adolf Anderssen's so-called "Immortal Game" against Kieseritsky in London, 1851.  Both masters were strong players, with Anderssen considered the unofficial world champion of the time.  Black's defense wasn't perfect, yet without making any obvious blunders he got mated while being ahead in material by a Bishop, two Rooks and a Queen.  Astonishing.

(The 1914 St. Pete tournament was one of the strongest tournaments of all time...just about every great player in the world was there.   It was at this tournament where the Czar of Russia gave birth to the term "Grandmasters of Chess" by awarding that designation to the five tournament finalists:  Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, Tarrasch and Marshall).

The most famous MOVE ever played in a chess game was an incredible Queen sacrifice offered by Frank Marshall against Stefan Levitsky in 1912.  Once Levitsky recovered from the shock of Marshall's "23.   ...   Qg3", he resigned.

Other famous games involved Kasparov defeating Deep Thought (1996) and then losing to Deep Thought's descendant, Deep Blue (1997)
