Question:

What's the most responsible way to bag up my household waste?

I haven't used single-use plastic bags while shopping for the past couple of years, but I still have some left, and I use them for my household waste (things that can't be composted, reused or recycled). Is there a better option for waste - particularly the kitchen stuff that would smell if not bagged?

  1. I use biodegradable waste bags as the best solution to disposing of my household waste, you can buy them at Total Eco Store, I get all my eveyday household necessities there and they are affordable

  2. use large biodegradable bags! you'll have to shop around to find the large ones, and ones that dont degrade too quickly! i live in Canada and there are ones from a store called RONA kinda like the home depot....we have been using then for a long time and love em! lol we love to recycle and compost! we only through out 1 medium bag of waste every 2 weeks!!! with 5 people in the house!!!!! we really only get rid of things like plastic film, construction waste....etc..! we reuse or recycle our plastic bags at a collection bin at the grocery store!!!! i hope this helps!

  3. My personal opinion, if you have eleminated all the recyclables and compostables, then it doesn't matter. If something goes into a landfill it will not breakdown or biodegrade for possibly centuries. I've heard they have taken newspapers out of landfills after a couple decades and they could still read the print.

I'm an avid recycler and I try my best to reduce waste, but if it is going to the landfill it is doomed. I buy recycled plastic bags for my garbage.

  4. After you do the Reuse thing... and then the Compost thing ... then the Recycle thing... with what you have left :

the Greenest option would be a reuasable container that seals like a garbage can that is emptied / taken to a proper & Responsible facility, then this container can be reused... and no bags are needed.

#2>If throw away bags are a must they do make Biodegradable & Compostable garbage bags... They  have a different texture to normal plastic bags... one  company is called BioBag... I know in RI "Whole Foods" sells them... not sure about other parts of the country.... there may also be other companies that sell other versions....

#3> If you can't get some version of a Bio-Bag the next option would be a plastic garbage bag made from recycled material... these are also sold at "Whole Foods".

#4> Use a trash compactor to fit as much garbage as you can into a normal plastic garbage bag.
