  1. A mare.  Unless it's a Thoroughbred racehorse, then it only becomes a mare at five.


  2. 4 is a filly.

    5 and older is a mare.

    The exception is when a 4 year old is used for breeding... they usually get termed a mare even though they're not 5 yet and are technically still a filly.
