What's the name of that thin reed filled with spongey stuff?

Question

There's a fine, dark green reed that grows to around a foot and a half and a diameter of about 2 or 3 milimietres. When you peel it there's like a spongey material inside that you can chew (if you so wish).

I'd love to know the name, slang, or latin.
