What's the name of this cartoon?

so there are people and they have big robots, the humans go sit in the robot and control it from the inside, when they were in trouble, they called a special robot that comes from the sky and joins with their robot and creates a robot that transforms, 1 robot transformed into a lion, the other a flying bird, i can't remember what the 3rd one was.

Could it be Gatchaman/G-Force?  

There were 5 heroes who each had a vehicle(mecha) and dressed like different kinds of birds.  I'm not sure if they combined into one big robot tho.  That cartoon is an oldie but goodie. I use to watch it when I was little. *thumbs up*

It would've been Voltron but there wasn't a "bird" robot in the line-up.  Transformers would've been a good guess.  However transformers are autonomus, sentient robots from outter space. They work with humans but they don't have humans piloting them.  Coulda been Power Rangers - but that's live action, not a cartoon.
