What's the name of this clause? English grammar! :D?

What's the name of the clause starting with a participle? Is it acceptable to omit the verb to be in this case?

1) The protesters surged forwards, hatred in their eyes, rocks in their hands

I know they give background information about an independent clause but don't remember the clause's name. Could you help me? I was told it was a gerundive clause but am not sure.

Thanks in advance

  1. I would assume that any clause beginning with a participle would be an adjective clause.  A participle is always going to be an adjective, and a participial phrase always functions as an adjective within the sentence to describe a noun.  Thus, I would assume that it would follow that a clause beginning with a participle is an adjective clause.
