I was walking to the car the other day and noticed a family of weird looking mushrooms in my front yard. What caught my eye is that one was HUGE the biggest I had ever seen before. I live in Central Florida, born & raised. I took a picture of it just curious as to what kind it may be. Thanks for the help.

  1. It reminds me of a boletus luridus, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boletus_lur... . It is definitely a boletus, because of the pores underneath the cap.

Check if the pores turns blue after damage or pressure. If so, it is most likely the luridus, or a close relative.

  2. It's certainly a bolete of some sort, but I'd be more inclined to put it in the genus Suillus because of the markings on the stem (possibly scabers?) and the slimy looking cap (Is it actually slimy?  If so, it's almost certainly a suillus).

Dunno which one though, Suillus are a right pain in the ****

If you're wondering about edibility, I'd recommend against it.  All of the Suillus (and pretty much all non-red-pored boletes) are edible, but Suillus is well known for it's slimy texture and insipid flavor.  The common name of that genus is "Slippery Jack"
