  1. half-life of the waste material and since I hear that coal plants actually give america 70% of its power maybe Nuclear plants are just not doing enough in terms of how much power its actually generating for this country

  2. To start out insurance for nuclear power plants is outragous, which causes them to require huge government subsides to stay efficient because there just not practical. Second is long term storage, all nuclear waste is stored in a facility in arizona hundreds of feet underground. It is required to be in these giant metal cylindars that have all these layers of metal to keep radioactivity down outside, an extreemely expensive process. Then theres the whole radioactive steam being released and all the radioactive contamination of groundwater.  theres the gov'ts requirements to keep the facilities up to date, so they have to be rebuilt every decade or so (not sure on the time) and when they do this, the entire building has to be processed in the same way that the radioactive waste has been treated. Stored in the underground facility. Plus theres always the potential for a meltdown which would be a catastrophy all in itself. It really isnt practical, which is why no new facilities have been built since the 70's. Although when done correctly it is a clean source of energy.

  3. None, really--under normal circumstances.

Granted, operating nuclear power systems is a complex affair--and some of it, like disposing of nclear waste--is difficult.

But the only serious downside is that if there is a "catastrophic failure" its jst that--catastrophic.  The nuclear energy industry in the US has an outstanding safety record however.  And if proposals to build new plants are implemented, they'll have the enefits of decades of experience and new technology.

I wouldn't like to see such a program right now, though.  The current administration is entirely too corrupt--and this oe technology where people who take kickbacks or cut corners simply cannot be allowed.

  4. it brings out all the kooks when this kind of question is asked.

  5. Well, the possibility of a meltdown or other incident.

The problem of handling and disposing of the waste that no one wants in their backyard (see Yucca mountain)

  6. it will produce radioactive waste and it will kill you unless you are in a lead suit and i dont know what that is but i just know so hahaha

  7. Nuclear power (fission, anyway) produces radio active waste.  This waste product is difficult to store safely and remains toxic for a very long time.

Nuc. Power also scares people because they think that the power plants can explode like a n- bomb.  This is not the case, but fear is negative none the less.

Nuc power is subject to terrorist attack

    Nuc power is non-renewable.

On the positive side, it doesn't produce greenhouse gasses.

  8. annoying mushroom clouds.
