  1. Get off your *** and read, dude!!!  Every field of science is going through the most rapid expansion in information and discovery in history.

But if you're young, you're screwed.  Humans environmental foot print exceeded the planets carrying capacity in the early 1990's.  Our best future lies with reducing our impact (except for "good" people like americans), or immediately reducing the populations of every high impact country by 50%.

The most effective short term solution is to start with the highest impact individuals and kill them.  They are about 5% of the population and are responsible for 50% of the environmental degradation.  Short of that, there is no fix from science or anywhere else.

  2. The future of Science is discovering and enhancing our humanity, finding ways to confront and overcome issues which affect humankind's ability to live in peace.  Our future depends on the scientific acknowledgment of just how sacred human life is...

Cyborgs or Robots will only hasten our demise by lessening the need for human hands (industry, labor, agriculture)  thereby marginalizing human life more so than now.  This means more killing, more war, more diseases which will be allowed to go unchecked.  Once the majority of the population has been culled.  The remainder's will be even more susceptible to complete extinction because of low population numbers.  Humankind could be lost forever.

  3. The next turning points are:

    Singularity http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singularity...

This is the point at which robots overtake us at everything.

Synthetic Biotechnology: This is the point when as in the cartoon "The Jetsons" we obtain manufactured food on demand (in their case a pill but in ours anything that we wish to eat will be made by bacteria working for us in some laboratory, and the food will be chemically identical).

Medical advance of Cyborgs, Transhumans, Transformers and Bionics (it is not science fiction): Our manipulation of the genome and understanding of metabolism will allow us at some point to live forever.  This point is coming and will come much quicker than you think.  There will be a competition between the directed evolution of ourselves and of machines.  I think that machines will win this race but we will have both bionic and genetic components and able to live forever.  Also we will have very superior intellect and psychology for we will know the detailed workings of the mind.  Many of the diseases of today: cancer, obesity, and others will be erradicated by these insights that started with the DNA sequencing.

There will be other more mechanistic technology advances such as nanosensing, ubiquitous computation, quantum computing which will offer us unprecendented opportunities for intellectual and life choices.  Fuel cells, low power consumption technologies, virtual reality and all sorts of others will enable us to control our environment much better.

  4. is

    ai   see matrix

also curing aging gonna be acheave this century, making humans esentially imortal,  espciallly after  fusion with robots

  5. But there are robots at work right now.  How about cash machines?  Automated checkout gizmos?  Automotive welding robots?  Those irritating telemarketing calls?

  6. It is interesting.  Making robots (engineering) is competing with understanding of Biology (medicine).   It is becoming easier to copy Nature, to copy the solutions devised by nature.  At the same time, nature is constrained to the materials and solutions that it has adopted.  For example, the brain is an incredible computer but it developed this way to fit around the materials and building block constraints.  Through Physics and Engineering we developed silicon based computers.  Biology will merge with Information Science and Engineering.  This fusion will make great advances.  It holds the key to almost everything because with the DNA revolution and biomedical imaging and neuroscience we can understand what Life made but we can take the material and technology advances that we have increasingly made and combine them.  The result will be durable, reliable, resistant, flexible, intelligent.  My particular take is that the next thing is Psychology.  Once we understand the workings of the mind then we can stop or contain Evil and greed.  That will be of great benefit to all of us.  We will probably live in a world with far less disease, where energy and environmental problems are solved, and where we can apply our intellect to seek pleasure.  We will get pleasure increasingly from our intellects and less so from our bodies, but even this is hard to predict because we may opt to bring the virtual reality into a real reality and seek pleasure.  We are after all about emotions rather than about logic.

  7. The number one priority right now is to figure out a way to make this planet capable of providing for an exponentially increasing population.

  8. What is just around the corner is a little frightening so hold tight........

Looking at the MIT development of the 'swarm project', Future warfare will be assisted by thousands if minature flying 'quads'. These 4 rotor minature craft can follow programmed orders with minimal human input. They will be used ahead of convoys into unknown territory on board specialized vehicles. They take off, perform search operations and communicate within their group to effect their goal. when low on fuel, they return and refuel automatically. They will have IR seekers and explosives on board. If one detects IR soft or recognisable hard targets, they will destroy it. Even is shot at repeatedly, one will get through.-

Also big cash prizes are being given away to anyone capable of producing robot systems capable of performing house-to-house style military clearing operations.

The serious one to watch is RFID chipping. These tiny transmitters - smaller than a grain of rice, will be moulded, attached and even printed onto everything you buy in the place of barcodes for most items.

You will also have them in your ID, and credit cards.

When you shop, you could go into a shop, grab what you want, then walk out with it. The transmitter by the doors will detect the items you have, your credit details and ID, and electronically bill you for your items.

Unfortunately , other transmitters around the streets, can also monitor where you are at any given moment, and be referenced to CCTV systems.

If you drop litter, as each item is unique, they can trace it back to you, and you'll get a fine.

You will have to be a very good citizen, pay your taxes, fines etc, and not become wanted in any way - otherwise they will find you within minutes, and may send the quad's listed above, to tazer you, and then be taken away.

A full record of every book you've read, item you purchaced, Email sent or place you've been will be available for scrutiny.

There will be no hiding place.

For those who think i'm just BS'ing - do some of your own research on RFID human implants.

  9. Well, obviously nanotechnology is still paving the way in scientific advancements....As for the next century, let's just say that anything can happen....

  10. i think it would be most in 2 fields medical with stem cells, and energy type, to steer away from fossil fuels.

i also believe that computer technologies will always be one the rise.

  11. Robots and cyborgs were the promise of the last century.  They didn't materialize.

The problem with predicting the future is that we humans are very bad at it.  Where's my flying car?  Where's my prosthetic body?

So, "specially" you can probably do a better job of projecting the future than anybody you encounter in this section of Yahoo Answers.  Go for it.

  12. The next big thing will be the harnessing of the power of the rotation of the earth as suggested by Tesla in Margret Cheney's book Tesla Man Out of Time page 8. For more go to you tube, perpetual motion and look at the video posted by dclayjeepster, it's on about page 3 and go to my web site at www.geocities.com/scifuntubes/index.html

  13. the danger of singularity. with ever increasing speed, computer technology is doubling memory and speed faster and faster. The computer tech you and I use is already old school science. Professional computers such as the military, science, and government agencies use is light years ahead of anything on the market for consumer use.
