I'm 31 years old and I want to fly for the right reasons. For the fun of it and for the challenge

  1. The Flight Engineer is responsible for monitoring and controlling many of the aircraft systems.  The FE does not fly the plane; he/she  is responsible for inspecting the aircraft, overseeing fueling operations prior to flight.  During flight, the FE monitors the performance of the engines and cabin pressurization, air conditioning and other systems. Flight engineers are a dying breed.  Some older aircraft still flying that use FE's are Boeing 727 and 747, McDonnell Douglas DC10 and Lockheed L-1011.

  2. Not sure those are the "right reasons" but have you considered calling an airforce recruiter? Jeez man.

  3. You don't get to enter the AF as a Flight Engineer.

You must enter in a feeder career field, rise to the rank of E-4 or higher and then apply to retrain.

Feeder career fields are usually, Crew Chief, Jet Engine Mechanic, Hydraulics, or other aircraft maintenance fields.

Also can feed from other flying careers such as loadmaster.

You must earn you way into a prestigious job. Then get through almost two years of training to be fully qualified.

There are very few slots for FEs, fewer aircraft are using them. Mostly cargo aircraft.

Are you near a unit that flies that type of aircraft?

    C-130, C-5, KC-10, etc.
