What's the opposite of "return flight"?

My mom is teaching a TOEIC (it's kind of like a business English aptitude exam) class, and she was going over terms used for flying and in the airport. Then we kind of had this "huh?" moment when we figured out that we didn't know what the opposite of "return flight" was!!!!

It's not "outbound flight", because that corresponds to "inbound flight" . . . is it "exit flight"? Any ideas, regular flyers?

  1. Tough question. Maybe 'originating flight'

  2. Departure flight? On the airline times and stuff it says return and depart so, I'm assuming that would be it.

  3. hello flight

  4. one-way flight

  5. Well, it's not really the OPPOSITE, but the phrase is "One way ticket".

  6. You mean one way?

  7. departure flight...just a guess.

  8. Single or one way.

  9. outbound flight. have you really ever heard the expression "inbound flight"? i have never heard that.  call an airline, darn it and ask them, but i think you'll see i'm right.

  10. Flight of no return.

  11. A one-way ticket?

  12. I don't think there is an opposite. When most people talk about the return flight, they use words such as 'first flight' to talk about the... erm... first one. Or they say something about the 'flight coming here' (if they're at the place), or the 'flight going there' (if they're not there yet, or are back already). However, the opposites of those would actually be 'flight going back' or 'flight coming back', which means they aren't the opposites at all.

Edit: Actually, 'departure flight' is probably correct (I've never been on a plane, so I've never seen those boards). However, people don't really seem to use that phrase in general conversation...

  13. I think it is probably departure flight

  14. I work in the airline industry.  We use the term "return flight" frequently and in airline terminology the opposite of that would be "originating flight" or simply "origination".

For instance, someone may call and ask if they can change the time of their return flight.  We would ask what is their flight origination, or date of origination.

So in the airline industry, the opposite of return is origination.

  15. Original Destination. <}:-})
