Question:

What's the order of service for very traditional Catholic Wedding with Mass?

I'm choosing very traditional classical music (mostly sung in Latin; appropriate Italian operatic excerpts also a possibility) for a close friend's Catholic wedding and although I'm familiar with the normal Mass, I'd like to ensure that I get the order to service absolutely right. A Tridentine Mass O.O.S. would also be good if you know it ... basically I want to ensure that I don't miss anything out and most lists I've found online don't even tell you where the Eucharist is supposed to go! Many, many thanks in advance :)

  1. I'm not quite sure what you're looking for, do you want parts of the Mass or the hymns?

I got a book from the priest which pretty much has the entire order for either a Liturgy of the Word or a Mass, I think that the Pauline bookstores would carry something similar, it's for the entire service, but music is included in that.

  2. I'm sorry I don't understand your concern.  The order of the Catholic Mass is up to the priest.  You may choose the music and even some of the readings if the priest permits it, but not the Mass.  When I married, the priest told ME how he would perform the service, we had rehearsal a couple of nights before and everything went smoothly.  If you're truly concerned, call the parish priest and ask him your questions directly.

Also, as far as the music, ask the parish priest to put you in contct with the organist/pianist/singer, or if you are hiring your own people, be courteous and inform/clear this with the priest also.

When my niece married, she informed the priest that my daughter would be singing the Ave Maria by Schubert.  He told her to not worry about the pianist, he organized all that for her.  Actually, that was the first time I heard my daughter sing the Ave Maria, it was touching, for everyone present.

Good luck with the preparations and the wedding.

  3. I would talk with the church's music director. They should be able to help you. I'm sure they've performed at many weddings. And they can give you examples and then you can pick out which songs you want.

  4. To simplify it...

    Entrance

    Hymn

    1st Reading

    Responsorial Psalm Response

    2nd Reading

    Gosple (celebrant)

    Homily (celebrant)

    Marriage Ceremony: Exchange of vows

    Bidding Prayer and Response

    Offertory

    Hymn

    Communion

    Recessional

Usually the church/priest talks over the order of the mass/ceremony with you. If not, ask him and he'll be happy to do so.  If you want to add certain things to the ceremony, most will also work with you to incorporate that--I for example wanted to add a coin ceremony (used in many Latin based countries) and the priest was more than happy to add it in.
