  1. Capoeira is a martial art that originates from Brazil

the true origins of capoeira are for a large part African, but the full art is Brazilian. The dance routines and music originated from the fact that capoeira was illegal.  if slaves were caught practicing they risked having their tendons cut or later on in history 3-5 years in jail.  thus they disguised their art in a form of dance and acrobatics

capoeira is a great art in the way that it teaches a lot of the traditional lessons in Martial art (balance, timing, speed,...) in a very unique and non traditional way.

the problem with capoeira is that due to it's  illegal nature little of it's history is really documented.  Most of what we know has been passed down from teacher to student over the last 500 years.

  2. The slaves were forbidden to learn a martial art so they pretended it was a cultural dance from their homeland and nobody knew any better.

They played the music so that others would think it was a dance and not know it was a martial art.

The reason there are so many 'hands on the ground, legs in the air' moves is because the slaves were shackled and had no choice in that. They were genius in that. Despite being horribly restricted, abused and everything they managed to do a martial art and any one of us that complains about the bus service to go get our martial arts lesson could stand to remember those guys.

The adversity they faced and it's thanks to them that we have capoeira today.

They pretended it was a dance but it was actually a martial art. All of the moves descend from their circumstances at that time. The way they were chained and abused and how they fought the system.

    God bless them

Capoeira Rocks! - thanks to those guys!

  3. It was created by African slaves as a form of fighting and self defense.  Since the slaves were forbidden from training to fight, they made their fighting resemble dancing instead to fool the slave masters.

  4. It is supposed to have developed from the slaves being chained on the ships by their arms, so they had to kick at each other when a fight broke out, and to keep your balance on board the ship you would need to put your hand down.
