Question:

What's the point of a router CD?

Almost every router that I have ever seen/used comes bundled with a setup CD, and a sticker on the router and CD saying "Run CD First", since all routers have an access IP to configure settings, it makes the CD pointless

Instead of making a CD that just takes up system resources and does nothing but act as the middleman between the end user and the router firmware, why don't they just make a manual that shows the end user how to access the router's settings page on a web browser like it's meant to be accessed?

It seems that all the CD leads to is inexperienced end users freaking out because they misplaced it, and they think they are unable to use the router without it, when really all they need is an 8~9 digit number, and an average web browser

i like to set routers up manually

  2. You are on the right track... they are for the "inexperienced end users" who might not have any clue how to type in http://192.168.1.1 into a web browser.  Seriously...  A typical mac user is a good example.  They know how to click buttons if it starts up automatically, but would be clueless if their hands weren't held.  Not that many of the PC users are any better.  It's just a way to reduce the number of tech support calls for the manufacturer.

  3. A setup disk is primarily designed to help new users in setting up a router. Its main feature is an executable files that runs as a wizard that will run automatically to help inexperience user in setting up the router from cabling instructions, selecting internet connection type, personalizing wireless settings to setting up wireless security. By default the setup wizard will run automatically after you insert the cd.

If you are a user who is more interested in learning more on the technical process on setting up the device but dont have much technical experience, you would still need the cd since you will find the user guide on the disk usually saved on a folder labeled manual. Its saved as a PDF file. In the actual scenario, most inexperienced users would prefer seeking technical help than consulting the user guide if the setup wizard would fail.

A technical user on the other hand will not even need the cd. They will usually just jump right on there web browser and type in the '192.168 ...' address on the address bar after checking the address automatically obtained by the computer after they connect it to the router.

Popular router brands like Linksys also provide intelligent setup wizard the will can automatically identify the ISP and setup its own wireless and security settings on both the computer and the router without the user having to input any information. this is not commonly included on the cd but can be downloaded on there technical support website.
