  1. College huh?  Well when you leave the campus you may find a lot of Spanish being spoken around you.  While you may feel that English is all you need to communicate what you want others to know, you may find that you need to speak Spanish to understand if you are being made a target of.  LOL

  2. What is the point of taking music appreciation, art appreciation, history, fitness walking, bowling, golf, and a hundred others? College is suppose to make you a well rounded individual. You will find plenty chances to use Spanish in the US if you want. It could get you a job. I am learning to speak Spanish so I know what is being said. I don't like being ignorant. I learned the cuss words first and the rest is coming along fine. And I don't think you can communicate with everyone with English. I have had at least 6 times in Texas recently where the other person spoke only Spanish. The guy who did my concrete work and the woman who sells food at work to name a couple.

Take French if you would rather. I am sure any foreign language would do. Es major que nada!

  3. Learning another language can be one of the best things you can do.  It can make you more marketable when looking for a job in this global economy.  There are an increasing number of jobs that look for individuals that are bilingual.

  4. You sound like my son, John.  There are more Spanish speaking people in the United States than you realize.

Spanish is very close in spelling and etymology to Latin and studying this language will help you understand the origins of many of the word used in the English Language.  If you live in California you probably realize that many of the city names are Spanish.  San Diego, San Juan Capistrano, Sacramento, Los Angeles (which is actually La Ciudad de Nuestra Senora do Los Angeles) or The City of Our Lady of the Angels.

There are other languages you can study if you don't want to take Spanish.  Some schools are now offering American Sign Language as a foreign language.  It's kind of fun to eavesdrop on someone signing and they don't realize you understand what they are saying.  Also, you can use it during a concert, or in church, which you are supposed to be quiet.

  5. The world market is a global one.  If  you want to succeed in the everyday life of work then knowing a language (or more than one) can assure your success in working with other countries.

Business is no longer conducted in a bubble. Global English is a language of limited scope that will allow the accomplishment of only the most routine of tasks. This is far different from being able to negotiate and understand a country's language in intricate business dealings.

Even if you plan to travel for leisure, the lack of some language skills can cause a breakdown in communication and lead to misunderstanding.

Do not limit your career or life opportunities - learn a language.

  6. What if you move to a southern or west coast area? You might need it.

Besides, there have been proven cognitive benefits of learning a language. It helps to open up your mind and stretch 'brain muscles.'
