  1. Because some people prefer talking to good cops and some prefer the bad cops.

  2. The bad cop scares the fool out of the suspect, but the good cop works to gain the trust of the suspect.

Eventually, the suspect is supposed to open up to the good cop before the bad cop loses it and the suspect is in real trouble.

  3. so the good cop can gain the suspects trust.

  4. Its an interrogation technique, which was discovered by accident in World War 2 by the n**i Germans.  When a prisoner is given the impression a guard had intervened to look out for the prisoner's welfare and safety, the prisoner feels in debt, and to return the favor, will give away truthful information in return.

In WW2, a German citizen had moved to England, and adopted the English culture; so his manners and speech were that of a Briton, but his heart and loyalty was to Germany.  He returned to Germany when WW2 started, and the n***s were concerned he may be a spy for British intelligence.  To keep him from accessing valuable military info, he was assigned to guarding British POWs in a prison camp.  He made sure the English were treated according to the Geneva Convention Treaty, and looked after their basic needs like medical, better food, blankets in the winter, etc...When he arrived at the prison camp, talking like an Englishman, but wearing a n**i uniform, the Britons were skeptical & believed he was a traitor to England.  But when conditions improved, the prisoners warmed up to him, seeing him as a fellow Englishman, in spite of his German uniform.  While engaging in small talk with the prisoners, he would slip questions that were classified military info. For example; "...rather odd the Spitfire pilots would engage well in aerial dogfights, then turn tail and retreat when their machine guns begins to fire tracers."  A prisoner would casually reply "oh, that's because the tracers means he's low on ammo."  For the rest of the WW2, the Gestapo gave a series of questions to this former British,  German officer, and he would slip the question into their conversations.  The British POWs always gave him honest and accurate answers.  The Germans realized befriending a prisoner will yield accurate data, as opposed to torture, which often yields false information.

  5. Well, if you can tell that that's what their doing then its not meant for you. It's really meant for those that fall for it and talk (meaning dumb criminals).

  6. On tv, it adds to the drama.

In real life, it is almost totally useless.  first time the "bad cop" does anything "bad", the suspect lawyers up and then you don't talk to the suspect any more, just his attorney.

  7. Simple.  1 cop is pretending to be your friend , he's wants to help you, make you feel at ease. The other cop is the one that wants to hang you out to dry. So you as the criminal starts to think, this cop is going to hang me but this other one is being nice, he understand me. As much as I hate saying this, just watch any cop show like Law & Order and the rest and watch how they play the game. Cop 1:You are a crook, I'm going to put you away till your grandkids graduate college, I know you did it. Cop 2: do you want a soda something to drink, look I understand what you did, life is hard. but if you let me help you I'll help you the best I can, we can make a deal, the DA will understand. Next thing you know, you are confessing to being on the grassy knoll in Dallas in 1963. They do the paperwork, you go to jail and your friend gets a medal or commendation.

  8. i think the bad cop means, undercoverred cop.

  9. To make the person feel intimidated and upset by the bad cop so theyll open up to the good one. Pressure by the bad cop, sympathy from the good one.

  10. It unsettles the mind.

  12. It's just to throw you off, there's no definite effect. You might get your lie wrong between the two cops or you might get intimidated by the bad cop or prefer talking to a well mannered one. By doing this they cover all their bases to see which you are more likely to respond to.
