Its very cheap here in Kerala. if you are a foreigner, there is no need for you to worry about the lodging rentals. it is managable...and the price also depends on the kind of lodge/hotel you choose to stay. it is too costly only if the hotel is a 5/3 star international ones. the rest i think, you could get a room for 500 rupees, that is 10 US dollars.
