What's the procedure for making a proper bird's mouth cut?

I'm about to start tying a small addition on to an office. The room is going to be open-air and the only connection to the existing structure is going to be with the roof, which I am supposed to attach by running 2x6's up into the present trusses. The roof, I believe, is a 4/12 pitch, and I'll need to make bird mouth cuts to tie onto both the subsequent outter wall of the new room (the wall is only going to consist of six 6x6 posts with top plates attaching them to one another) and also the existing wall of the office on which the trusses are currently resting.

  1. To try to explain the proper procedure and measuring etc would take me paragraphs and I might leave out an important step.  Or not be clear enough.

I am an experienced carpenter and cut them myself, but with trusses I do not cut them too often.  So what I do to refresh my memory is I refer to an instruction book that comes with speed squares.

Swanson's is one  Most speed squares do not come with the booklet, so just look for one that does.  It will give you step by step instructions, with diagrams.  It will also give you helpful tables if you need help to determine lengths etc.

If you have 2 circular saws you can set up at once, I have always found this best.  1 for the top or common cut and the other for the bird's mouth.
