I have insurance but want to change to get onto my husband's insurance (military) and cancel the plan I have now. Should I let the insurances overlap (apply for one while I still have the other) or should I cancel my current one before I sign up for my husband's?

  1. You don't need to have them overlap. Just co-ordinate the begin and end dates. Also be sure you want to cancel your insurance-compare the benefits and make sure you are not losing a benefit that you currently have on your insurance that may be limited or not covered on your husband's insurance. If you want your coverage back, you will have to wait until open enrollment to re-enroll.

  2. You should be able to have the old plan stop on the day your new plan would start. There is no need to overlap coverage. I think you just sign up for your husbands coverage and you are not really applying for coverage. When you apply for coverage there is a chance you can be denied so make sure you have the new plan before you cancel the old coverage.
