What's the procedure to change my visa from H4 to F1?

I have H4 visa right now, and I have been admitted to a univ. and will start school this fall. I want to change my visa status to F1. What is the procedure for this? Do I need to go out of the country?

  1. You will need to file form I-539 along with the fee and supporting documents which will include a SEVIS form I-20. If the school you want to attend is authorized to accept foreign students, the Foreign Student Adviser will be able to give you one.

    He or she should be able to walk you through the process. You cannot start school until the application has been approved so it may be too late to enroll in the Fall, but if you start working on it now, you'll be all set for January.

    You can accomplish the change without leaving the U.S.
