What's the purpose of buying a Tivo (or any kind of) network adapter? Can't I record without it?

Besides having updated tv info, what's really the purpose of buying an adapter if I know what shows on what channel I'm going to record?

  1. The new Directv DVR's allow you to download shows on demand. So the only way to get these programs is via a network connection. The new Directv models have a built in network adapter. I am unsure if all models do, but I know the HD DVR has it.


  2. yes, you can record, but you need a phone line to allow the tivo box to call home to update programming.
